Assignment 5 : Paint to music

Assignment 5 : Paint to music

Today we had done our final assignment on the spot.Although I thought it was impossible since we only have just a few hours left till class was over Ms Lisa still insisted on finishing it up today. We were given 2 hours to paint on 2 A1 sized watercolour papers. Each paper we would have to listen to a prepared playlist and paint for an hour.

For the first attempt I painted to the playlist which was created by the class. Most of the songs were upbeat ,some were melodious .The staring process took a while for me,I needed to calm myself and relax.I had no idea what to paint what soever, which colours to choose and which methods I would use.I took a bold step and just decided on a colour and begin spreading ‘Ultra Marine ‘ on paper. As time passed and the music changes I finally got the rhythm,I started off painting with less “force” if that makes sense.I used pinks, purples, orange and  anything I could get my hands on and just blended the colours in.Towards the end of the songs I felt like my painting took a toll of galaxies and I suppose I was going for a gloomy space effect.I blended it some more, the far off brighter colours I felt represent hope .In a way, even if your stuck out in a  gloomy space there could still be hope.

The second piece was done by listening to Ms Lisa’s classical playlist.Me and Serra joked about it being a Barbie themed song :p .Whiles it did reminded me of joyous melodious songs I begin painting soft wave strokes using a turquoise colour .Towards the middle parts of the playlist, the once melodious songs seemed more darker with sharper tunes .As I felt so, the song now reminded me of a  song of tragedy ,which made me a little upset.I begin thinking of a story behind the song. I pictured windy days, full of storms and terror, a sailor out lost at sea.Dramatic I know :/    So my once  pink clouded skies with rays of yellow sunlight was  now masked with a more gloomy greenish sky.The colours blended well and so I moved on making my y waves darker ,blending purples into the bed of sea.As things were coming to an end, I realised I got that heart aching feeling.I painted with heavy strokes, got my fingers dirty smudging whites to create highlights. I wanted to give my all and as I did, time was up,it was over.

Overall it was a fun experience, never have I ever had a painting session that allowed me to be set free,It was amazing not to stress out and think to much of what there was to paint. The atmosphere was perfect, hectic at first but everyone came to ease.It was beautiful to see the sight of everyone painting and doing their own thing.

Assignment 4 : Monogram

Assignment 4 :Monogram

We finally received our individual assignment from Ms Lisa."MONOGRAMS" she said.On that day itself she  gave us an hours time to visit the library and go  through books related to font art which will help to inspire our latest art piece. With the help of my class mates ,they would each pick out a word that would best describe me .

After scavenging and rampaging through the books sorted out in the library,I begin to see a pattern  I'd much fancy.I realised most of the fonts I had picked out were mainly made out of bold letters.
I guess it was kinda strange,no one knew exactly what I was,silence........   .Finally Ms Lisa broke the silence by describing me as "Vintage". I suppose in a way I am,I love all these old  carnival fonts, vintage logos, bold bright colours to begin with. But the "vintage" she described mostly meant dainty suppled things, airy and free.

Examples of my inspiration :

Whiles doing some research I realised that vintage could mean a lot of things. When I googled modern vintage they were mostly focused on the visuals.

Fast Update :
Unfortunately after I showed Ms Lisa my drafts I had I misunderstood the whole monogram thing.

The rejected monograms I purposed

From what I read and understood a monogram is a motif of two or more interwoven letters, typically a person's initials, used to identify a personal possessions or a logo. And apparently  I tried to spell my name out "IMN" instead of my initials which were "IN".Therefore, I then knew what I must do and re-sketch my new ideas.

I extended my research online. There I used mediums like pinterest instagram and of course google .

My newer designs :

Design number 2 was chosen with a bit of an alteration

First attempt on the smaller sized stencils, I accidentally cut off the top swirl :/

  Trials

The final products

Rational :

Since I've done stencilling before it wasn't much of a challenge for me,I mean apart from almost loosing a chunk of meat on my fingers, I survived :) I didn't take as much progression pictures as I wanted too, with my fingers dirtied with paint,I chose to keep my artwork clean. This was an easy process where all I had to do was paste the stencil over my items and either use the spongy dabbing technique with acrylic or use spray paint. However, theres always a but,it was tricky not to get the paint leaking underneath the stencil.I had to secure everything properly.

For the poster noticed that I picked out a simple frame.I did it so that it wouldn't draw to much attention rather then the monogram itself. It was also best to keep thing at a minimal.

I wanted to keep a theme,I knew very well it was best to.I sticked to browns and pastel colours, mostly blues since they are my favourite colour.Overall Im proud that I've made it this far :)

6 items I've used:

-envelope
