Photography Assignment 2: Indoor Shooting Practice

Change of Venue: The Garage, KL

Since our final assignment is approaching there were a lot of things that had been reconsidered. First of was the location of shooting. Originally I chose the Vermani house in hopes to capture my model and its setting. Sadly however, it seems as tho it might be a bit of a stretch to get an agreement for the request to shoot at the location. As my previous post has stated that the Vermani house is currently resided by a young couple and their younger daughter.

And so I've settled upon The garage,KL.

As for the model, I've decided to ask my good friend Ummar. He will play the role of a grunge 90’s styled  rebellious teenager. The setting is set in a place where large shipment containers are stacked atop of one another thus eventually creating a new sort of teenage getaway secluded from the  hustle and bustle of the city. 

Brief info of the model

Street Photography : Little India, Klang (Updated)

A lady putting together a flowered necklace. She was one of the first to be photographed as soon as we sat foot in Little India, Klang.  Assuming she was used to all these tourist taking photos, she didn't bother much or even hesitated as cameras begin clicking away. 

An uncle in his bicycle store. He was on all fours when I caught him fixing what appears to be scrapes of metal, perhaps they were bicycle gears. His partner much older than he was, sat behind blending in with the background.

A pious man walking around on the streets. Dressed in bright coloured clothing, layers upon layers, I quickly snapped the photo. He appeared to be in a hurry.

These three ladies were comfortable enough to have us taken their photos as if its been done before. They simply carried about their daily routine and carried on with their playful conversations.

A man is seen staring straight into the eyes of the camera. 

This man caught me stealing a photo of him. He looked tired and restless by the hot summers heat.

These kids were waiting for the bus to school. While their mother was having a chat with the locals, I flashed my camera and took photos of them. The hot heat seemed to effect this two subjects as they had wary patience waiting.

I suppose this uncle was a monk. Pious and spiritual man. He had a mini radio that he had carried in his little leather pouch bag seen hanging on his neck, spiritual music I believe. He wore bright mustered yellow clothing and walked around with a stick, lowered his gaze whenever he was approached.  

A man caught my eye during the blazing heat of day. Waiting to cross the road I quickly snapped the photo. 

Photography Task 4: Target users and style

Since I've missed the last class and last weeks tutorial. I suppose I'll update what has been asked of me since my previous tutorial. I was asked to search for a muse who would model for me for the final photography assignment. I was to give a brief description about him/her and decided what sort of style I would go for.

Target User / Model Character


The style and sort of character that I want in my shootings would be a teenager, probably a laid back sort of person looking to chill. Grunge, I don't give two shit's kinda person. This place would be a retreat home. Shone away from the busy hustle and bustle of the streets. Its almost therapeutic to stay in a concrete jungle like house.


A perfect example of this character would be Sky Ferreira.

The Venue:
Vermani House

The house happens to be a remodelling exercise of an existing house which turned into a house for a couple an their younger daughter. The existing house has been ripped and left bare to its true concrete structure onto which roofs and walls were added. The house turns itself away from the street with little openings in order to provide maximum privacy. The courtyard is in the shape of a horse shoe is where most of the daily activities occur.

Task 3: Local Interior Spaces and Local Designers

I have fondly appreciate the art of simplicity.  The term "Less is More" by architect Mies Van der Rohe has greatly influenced the building design of today. Nowadays, interior architects strive to achieve that holistic simple designs by stripping down back to basics, in terms of materials and spacial planning. Industrial design as well as green design has since been a popular design trend and has since been embraced by local architectures here in Malaysia. Below are a few examples of interior spaces with these design elements 

Sekeping Serendan Retreat House 

The architecture of this building is interesting in a way it compliments, better yet suits to the tropical rainforest environment of Malaysia. The idea of having a holistic simple design by limiting the use of material finishes such as glass, steel, timber and concrete in order to achieve that minimalistic approach of design gives of a sort of industrial vibe. The  layout as well as the furnitures of the interior is set in such a way where open spaces of transparency and lightness celebrates and compliments the surrounding natural environment.

Sepang House by Eleena Jamil 

The Sepang house is also another example of a modernist approach. The use of raw material such as concrete, wood and steel has developed a material language that echoes the tropical setting. Most people would presume the lack of interior furnishings within the space as boring and plain, with little to no splashes of colour. However, it is in the richness of material textures that  screams  out the wining design.

Terrace House Renovation in Sungai Buloh Malaysia

This house is located at a new housing development in sungai buluh. The idea of contemporary design  approach was to bring in lush greenery into the living space. An open plan concept that acts as a courtyard in order to bring natural lighting and shadows helped to make the place more airy. The use of bare wooden furniture as the tables and shelvings gave the place a more organic relaxing feel.

Joy a furniture showroom

This space was designed as a showroom for furnitures in which it has an open plan design. I especially love how, there is a contrast in both colour and material used. The walls acts a a partition that could subdivide the space and create new backdrops for their other furniture sales. The panels are made of mdf pegboards for some texture. The furnitures also add a pop of colour in which brings contrast to the existing space.

Eleena Jamil

Eleena Jamil is a local architect based in Kuala Lumpur. She is one of Malaysias foremost female architects that works on a diverse range of projects whether large or small with her practice Eleena Jamil Architect (EJA) which she formed in 2005. Eleena is strongly inspired by the simplicity of modernism designs but strives to go beyond and produce works that are both eminently practical and comfortable.

Bringing back that Spark

I had a one on one session with my lecturer about what my thoughts where when I typed the letters to my previous post about interior architecture. He told me that it was bold of me to be honest about things like that, however he was quite concern for me. How was I going to gain back my interest for all things interior. How was I going to  ignite that spark again? After a few talks he asked what would I have done differently if I could turn back time. I told him I'd much rather take fine art. That of course was a whole other topic, but he ended up concluding that I could take inspirational photos of sculptural interiors. I couldn't agree more.

I believe furniture is not only restricted to tables and chairs but even the whole ceiling becomes a living art. Having rhythmic curves and designs creates a sense of fluidity which makes the place seem more lively.

Top 5 Minimalist Photos

Im a little late on uploading this, perhaps you might say that I was lazy or simply procrastinating but really I was finding for a suitable subject matter. As a' designer' I was mostly looking for tiny details, something other passers might miss out on.

 Reflection :

Getting back into photography I've realised I've gotten a little shy carrying around a camera with bugged out lenses that stuck out like a sore thumb. The amount of stares you get of people wondering what your business was to carry such a thing. I mean who carries a camera nowadays anyways , right? Well after some warm up, the shyness went away, and I was taken aback with the memories of my photography adventures during foundation. It suddenly feels so good to snap photos in black an white.
